Boxscore and Game Notes: Kentucky vs. Pikeville

  • leads the exhibition series with , 2-0. The Wildcats also defeated the Bears, 99-64, on Oct. 31, 2007.
  • Kentucky has its second preseason game Friday, Nov. 5, vs. Dillard University in Rupp Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and it will be televised by Fox Sports South and the Big Blue Sports Network.

First-Half Notes

  • Kentucky opened with , , , and .
  • Miller opened the scoring with a short jumper with 19:27 on the clock.
  • There were six lead changes in the early going. Pikeville had its biggest lead at 13-10 when Brandon Knight scored six straight points to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish.
  • Kentucky opened its lead to as many as 17 points (38-21) before settling for a 43-27 advantage at intermission.
  • Knight led all scorers in the first half with 16 points.


Second-Half Notes

  • Pikeville edged as close as 11 points at 47-36 but got no closer.
  • The lead stretched to 19 at 69-50 with 9:20 to play Darius Miller scooped an alley-oop pass for a Terrence Jones dunk.
  • Kentucky extended the lead to 31 points at the final score of 97-66.

Team Notes

  • Kentucky had a robust night at the free throw line. The Wildcats made 44 of 56 foul shots, 78.6 percent.
  • If this had not been an exhibition game, 44 free throws made is only two short of the school record of 46.
  • The 56 attempts would have tied the school record for one game.

Individual Notes

  • Brandon Knight led all scorers with 22 points.
  • Darius Miller posted a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. In a non-exhibition game, 21 points would have been a career high and 10 boards would have tied his career best.
  • Four Wildcats placed in double-figure scoring, including Knight, Miller, DeAndre Liggins (18) and Doron Lamb (16). Liggins' 18 points would have tied his career high.

On This Day In UK Basketball History

On March 28, 1992, in what many called the “best NCAA Tournament game ever,” Kentucky takes defending NCAA champion Duke into overtime before losing 104-103 in the East Regional finals in Philadelphia. A last-second shot by Christian Laettner sends Duke to the Final Four, and breaks the hearts of Wildcat fans everywhere. It is Cawood Ledford’s last game as the “Voice of the Wildcats.”

 

On March 28, 1998, against Stanford, Kentucky rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit, then grabbed a 5-point overtime lead, before fending off the Cardinals to advance to the title game for the third straight season. Jeff Sheppard canned three long-range three-pointers - two in the final three minutes and one in overtime - en route to a career-high 27 points.

 

On March 28, 2014, unranked Kentucky beat No. 5 Louisville 74-69, in the 2014 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.  Aaron Harrison buried a three-pointer from the left corner with 39 seconds left that put UK ahead to stay before 41,072 in Lucas Oil Stadium.

 

On March 28, 2015, No. 1 Kentucky defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 68-66, in the 2015 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.  With its 37-0 record on the line, Kentucky trailed Notre Dame 59-53 with 6:14 left. UK rallied in front of 19,464 fans in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena and preserved its perfect season thanks to a crucial blocked shot by Willie Cauley-Stein and two game-deciding free throws from Andrew Harrison in the final seconds.
