Obituary – Sidney “Sid” Cohen, Panama City (FL) News Herald (June 22, 2012)

All-American Basketball player and local business man, Sid Cohen, passed away at his home, Wed., June, 20, 2012.

Sid began his career in the U. S. Army playing on the U. S. Army European basketball team that won the 1955 Championship. It was during Sid’s Army career he first got the attention of the University of Kentucky head basketball coach, Adolph Rupp, who was conducting a clinic in Germany, Sid impressed him. After completing his tour of duty in the Army, Sid received a basketball scholarship to Kilgore Junior College, where he was named MVP of the team for two years in a row. He also won the Junior College Championship in 1957 and 1958. In 2004, Sid was elected to the Kilgore Junior College Hall of Fame.

In 1958, Sid received a scholarship to the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of the 1958-1959 National Championship Team. Sid was named All-American Honorable Mention in 1960 and was drafted in the fourth round (32nd overall) by the Boston Celtics. In 1986, Sid and his wife, Shirley founded S & S Interiors in Panama City Beach and Southern Window Services. The businesses continue at the S & S Plaza on Panama City Beach Parkway.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 40 years, Shirley, his children, Randall, Russell, Kin, and Merit, and grandchildren, Chelsea and Dylan.

A celebration of Sid’s life will be held 5:00p.m., Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Young officiating. A gathering will be held from 4:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice. A special thanks to Elsie Smith, Sid’s caretaker for the past 2 years, Dr. John O’Connell and Nurse Wendy and Emerald Coast Nurses Coleen and Susie.
